About the film...
In the near future you need a license to be an adult. Without this license you have no rights at all. Unlicensed is a story about everyday people learning to cope in this subtly dystopian world.
Unlicensed is a near-future dystopia where instead of automatically becoming an adult at 18, one must earn Adult License by passing a test. This is the story of Jeff, who is 28 and has failed the test multiple times. His younger brother Kenny has just passed the test at 16. Jeff is relegated to living in a dormitory, since as a ‘minor’ he can’t sign an apartment lease. He lives amongst slackers and rebels, and doesn’t fit with either group. His young brother can drive, drink, and and do everything that comes with the legal status of ‘adulthood.’ Yet Kenny lacks the emotional maturity to handle these rights and gets into serious trouble, from which his older brother must bail him out. Jeff knows he has the maturity to succeed and is being held back by not having his ‘adult’ license, but test-taking anxiety and independent thought are holding him back. Will he attempt the test again?
